  • Goober grows a beard and thereby not only becomes suddenly smart, he somehow instantly loses his twangy accent as well.

    7.2
The writers had a great idea in having Goober alter his personality after growing a beard. The difference in his overall persona with the new facial hair is astounding. The only problem is, they made the change too extreme to be at all believable. After making a fool of himself his first day in an adult education history class, Goober takes off on a hunting trip. When he returns, his full beard earns so many compliments about how smart he appears, he decides to keep it. The only problem is, he has been self-transformed into a "deep thinker" and becomes a long-winded lecturer and a bore to everyone.

It would have been more believable if Goober and his new beard suddenly made him stoic or more stuffy, but instead he really does become this philosophic computer that spouts out a steady stream of information. The transformation was a little too radical. However, a credit to the actor and a stunner for me about this episode is how surprisingly attractive George Lindsey becomes when he loses the Goober gig!moreless
  • Professor Goober Pyle?

    8.0
A very interesting episode with some very solid laughs. Goober's sensitivity is once again seen when he realizes just how ignorant he is. The beard he accidently grows on vacation makes him appear smarter he believes (and other people tell him he is distinguished and professor looking) and he starts to spout all sorts of intellectual things. He eventually becomes a big boor--until he realizes he is annoying everyone in town. I particularly liked this episode because there was a part for almost everyone in town and really reflected Mayberry.moreless
