  • Andy becomes a paranoid father!

This is an interesting episode because we see Andy "lose his cool" and become overbearing with Opie about his math scores, and truly pressure him. Of course, Opie ends up doing worse in this way, and Andy figures out that he can't force his son to have good grades--that the important thing is to have balance in one's life. As always, it is wise Aunt Bee who has the right idea. Barney is very funny as he joins Andy in the pressure (and actually creates much of it) to get Andy to straighten Opie out. The scene where Barney is discussing "vocational schools" is not to be missed!moreless

    • Although this episode is called "Opie Flunks Arithmetic" Opie never actually flunks anything, he only receives one bad mark. Although Opie is often shown as an outstanding and upstanding young man, he's always portrayed as an average student, often getting poor marks in school for his lack of effort.

As it would turn out, Opie does attend college and becomes a journalist.

    • This episode would be Don Knott's last as a regular cast member. In the story line, Barney moves to Raliegh to become a big city detective. Barney would guest star on five episodes over the last three seasons.
