  • Andy is reluctantly drafted to umpire the big game between Mt. Pilot and Mayberry. The winning team gets to go to Raleigh. The entire town turns on him after he calls Opie out at the plate to end the game.moreless

    6.0
First off, despite the reviews, nobody else seems to have actually seen this episode. Andy calls Opie out sliding into home plate, trying to stretch a triple into a home run, not calling strike three. This is one of those father-son episodes AGS does so well, expanded to include the reaction of the town. The episode has a lot of heart and good appearances by Andy as the reluctant ump, Goober as the coach, Floyd, Bea and Opie. Howard cements his role in the town by defending Andy in his column in the newspaper, basically taking the usual Andy role of talking sense into people. While nobody actually apologizes to Andy, they let him know they were wrong to crucify him the way they did and he's still their friend, right or wrong. Ironically, if you watch the play, one can clearly see Opie is obviously safe. You don't even have to slow-mo the play. He's clearly safe.moreless
  • Strike Out!

    8.8
This episode is a very good one, and particularly because it is interesting to see Andy being ostrasized by everyone in Mayberry after he strikes out Opie. Howard Sprague comes to his defense in a wonderfully written letter in the newspaper. This is a wonderful example of this show--its sincerity and its simple moral message. The music in this episode is very effective and quite poignant after everyone comes to make amends to Andy for doubting him.

    Not to be missed!moreless
