The Andy Griffith Show

Season 1 Episode 16

The Beauty Contest

Aired Monday 9:30 PM Jan 23, 1961 on CBS

  • Trivia

    • Floyd's original pageant song, "Oh, Hail to Thee, Miss Mayberry" is sung to the tune of the Christmas carol "O' Tannenbaum" more commonly known in the US as "Oh, Christmas Tree".

    • In this episode's epilogue, Opie's girl friend, Mary Wiggins, is seen in the barbershop making her the first in a very short list of females to have ever graced the inside of Floyd's. Ellie appeared briefly in Mayberry on Record, Aunt Bee in a couple of episodes (one of which was The Jinx), a female reporter in Crime Free Mayberry and, of course, the curvy and sweet smelling manicurist Ellen Brown in The Manicurist.

  • Notes

    • You might notice that when Andy and Ellie leave the Mayor's office they emerge outside near the backdoor to the jail.  The geography of the inside of the jail never quite matches up to the outside of the jail.  The Mayor's office is stated several times to be on the second floor of the courthouse/jail but how one actually gets to the second floor is a mystery.  There are no doors inside the courthouse that lead upstairs.  There is a door to the left of cell number two, but that door is never used or opened and it disappears in season two.

    • Elvia Allman, who had recurring roles in half-a-dozen TV series, is perhaps best known as Elverna Bradshaw, Granny's nemesis and rival on The Beverly Hillbillies.

    • Josie Lloyd, who played the mayor's daughter Josephine Pike, would go on to play Lydia Pike in a later episode (with no indication that she was the mayor's daughter, even though the last names were the same). She also appeared as Lydia Crosswaith in Goober and the Art of Love.
