  • Aunt Bee's Birthday Gift

    9.5
One of the best episodes of the series, as we see practical Aunt Bee fall in love with a luxurious bed jacket--and tries as hard as she can to give some clues to Andy. He, of course, doesn't "get it" and gives her some preserve jars for a birthday gift (!)--she had mistakenly thought he had bought her the gift--but it turns out andy bought it for the mayor who was too busy to go and purchase it himself. The interesting twists in the story, and how effortlessly it is woven into the episode is classic. The episode's specialness is derived from the universal experience of wanting something very specific at your birthday or other occasion--and being so crestfallen when you don't get it. Everyone can relate to that feeling--and this is where this episode hits that classic and all too human level of emotion. A true winner!moreless

    • Aunt Bee: Andy, let me make something quite clear, I'm going to be very upset if you do anything foolish about my birthday.
Andy: You got a birthday comin'?
Aunt Bee: I mean it! Now you've got to promise me to be sensible. Birthdays are just for children.
Andy: Well don't fret about it, it'd be terrible to see worry wrinkles on a girl of 22!

    • (Opie & Andy are discussing Aunt Bee's birthday)
      Opie: How old's Aunt Bee?
Andy: You know, I'm not rightly sure.
      Opie: I'll ask her.
Andy: Whoa, I wouldn't do that. See, Aunt Bee, she ain't too sure about it either.
Opie: She don't know how old she is?
Andy: Nothin' so surprisin' about that. It's easy for her to forget.
Opie: Don't she even know the day she was born on?
Andy: She knows the day alright, it's the year she's a little fuzzy on.
      Opie: Oh.
Aunt Bee: (enters the room) Andy, can I drive into town with you?
Andy: Well, sure. Just let me go upstairs and get changed.
Opie: Aunt Bee, don't you really know how old you are?
Andy: Heh heh. We was just havin' a little, uh, litle guessin' game.
Aunt Bee: Well, let's see now. I must be 21.
Opie: But you were 21 last year.
Andy: Oh, that's right. It worked out so well that Aunt Bee thought she'd go around again.
Opie: Are you allowed to do that?
Aunt Bee: You know, Opie's right. I must be goin' on 22.
Andy: Oohhh... you look so much younger!
