  • Some great dialogue and a major development for Gomer

    9.0
This episode is momentous not only in the series but pop culture in general: it's the first time we ever see future Marine Gomer Pyle in any sort of official government uniform. The results are hilarious as Barney tries to turn the doltish Gomer into a full fledged deputy. Barney's speech to the robbery suspects ("Now here at the rock we have two basic rules...the first rule is, obey all rules!") is a series classic, but look for Gomer's open-mouthed expression as he hangs on Barney's every word. The great, out of the blue dialogue ("And take that gun out of your mouth!") and recurring developments make this look almost like something filmed by the Cohen brothers...minus the swooping camera angles.moreless

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Nothing on the roof top makes sense. When Barney and Gomer are looking over the side of the courthouse building, how can there be an alley where there is no room? The court-house and Floyd's are adjacent to each other, abutted, so where's the alley. What the camera was looking at was the space between Foley's and the hotel. I believe it was George Kennedy and the guy from honeymooners (George Petri?) that they were spying on.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Barney: Here at the Rock we have two rules. Memorize them so you can say them in your sleep! Number one: Obey all rules! Secondly, do not write on the walls as it is difficult to get writing off of walls.

    • Andy: Now Barney I'm not gonna have time to go after the other two if I have to keep catching these same two over and over again.

    • Barney: (to the prisoners) What's going on? You're not supposed to touch this key! Only authorized personnel! Smart allecks!

    • Andy: How'd they get loose?
Barney: Well I was conducting my shakedown, and I told them not to leave! Now it was their fault! Clear case of disobedience. It ought to go right on their record!

    • Andy: (to Gomer) Why don't you clean up these light bulbs here. We can use them next Christmas. And take that gun out of your mouth!

    • Andy: I got to go out and look for the two that's still loose. Now promise me you'll stay away from the prisoners.
Barney: You got nothing to worry about.
Andy: And make Gomer stay away from them too.
Barney: I tell ya, the Mayberry Jail is gonna be run as secure as the big house itself.

    • Barney: Now here at the Rock we have two basic rules. Memorize them so you can say them in your sleep. The first rule is obey all rules. Secondly, do not write on the walls, as it takes a lot of work to erase writing off of walls.

  • NOTES (0)

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Barney affectionately nicknames the Mayberry Jail "The Rock." This is an allusion to the infamous federal prison Alcatraz, considered to be the toughest prison in America.
