  • Clara gets her man!

    8.6
A very well done episode that illustrates well the magic of Mayberry, and its absolute charm. The writing is excellent and the the scene where Clara seranades the reluctant seller to part with his musical organ with "Some Enchanted Evening" is priceless. A very warm and witty entry into this series, and perhaps the best episode featuring Clara.
  • I like this episode :)

It's Sunday morning at the All Souls Church (also referred to as Community Church, etc) and the Mayberry churchgoers are into a rousing rendition of "Love Lifted Me", their closing hymn. Clara is playing away at the organ, until the organ goes a little rusty, and she hits some sour notes, and can't finish the song.Thru something that was no fault of her own, Clara is still mortified over her sour notes, and, back at the Taylor house, with Bee, and Andy,Helen, and Warren lined up on the couch, are comforting her ("Ohh, we UNDERSTAND Clara!") The church must gets a new organ, and Warren sees an add in The Mt. Pilot Chronicle for a like-new organ in good condition, from a Harlem Jacobson (sp?), a guy who lives on a farm outside of Mt. Pilot. Andy and Warren fone, and then go to his house to check out the organ. The organ is a beauty-a handsome wooden frame and a beautiful tone. But the church treasury only has $1,200 and the man is asking for an absolute $2,000. (He needs to money to build a new barn.)Andy asks him if he will hold it for 24 hours, and he can-do.

The money needs to be raised fast, and Andy and Warren ask the old boys in town like Floyd, Trudy, and friends to make their contributions. They are tight-pocketed about the project, so Warren suggest they all make pledges in advance to be paid later. The pledges are made all around (in good faith?) and the organ seems to be theirs-Clara loves playing it's beautiful sounds, too. Even Opie has promised his 60 cents to help. But when it's time to pay up, nobody can seem to find their $150 dollars (they each pledged the same amount) Seems there's economic problems, kid's braces to be bought, a new outfit for a wife, a busted hot water heater, and for Warren, TV and rent payments. Even Opie can't pay because Johnny Paul didn't come thru. Andy is fed up with the excuses, because they promised the seller they'd have the money. Seems the boys just got caught up in the spirit of giving.

Clara is heartbroken-she just can't let that organ go-even literally, when Andy and Warren try to haul it out to a truck from the church-she wraps her arms around it. Aunt Bee suggests letting Clara go back to the seller's house for a little persuasion. Andy doesn't know if it will work, but Aunt Bee encourages the boys to let her try-it won't do any harm, anyway. The 3 go back to see the guy, and Harlem offers "Miss" Edwards coffee and boxed cookies(he doesn't live fancy being a bachelor). Upon hearing the other is single, they each take an interest, and Clara tries one last attempt-by playing "Some Enchanted Evening" on his organ. She has won his heart-and the organ back for the church!moreless
