A mountain family named the Darlings make their way down from the mountains and into Mayberry. The unusual bunch includes Briscoe, the dad and leader of the clan-Charlene-a spunky mountain girl who has a crush on Andy, and "the boys"-her brothers who never say a word, but they sure can pick and sing! An old 1930's model truck pulls in to town, and Briscoe stops to cool down the radiator-by putting water in his hat from the town horse trough! They come back to the courthouse with Andy, for one of Aunt Bea's down home meals-Briscoe enjoying three bowls of white beans and Charlene flirting with Andy by putting her shoe on his leg!
After supper, Briscoe checks into a room at the Gem Hotel-but while it's supposedly only him, he sneaks his kids in through the window when the proprieter isn't looking! Once they (and all their instruments) are up there, they start some lively bluegrass music, much to the hotel clerk and Andy's suspicion.
Later on, Charlene is chasing the sheriff arounf the courthouse, and Andy says he's old enough to be her father! Briscoe reminds her that she already has a love-Dud A. Wash, who is due back from the army. Dud arrives on the bus, showing Charlene the mementos he's held close to him-hair ribbons, love notes, and a mountain gladiola. The two quickly become lovebirds again.
