Episode Summary

EDIT
Andy orders a group of gypsies out of town after they bother the residents. They soon set up camp outside of Mayberry and place a "curse" on the area in the form of a drought. Everything's later revealed to be nothing more than a hoax, as the gypsies are using a radio to enact their scheme.moreless

  • Gypsies come to Mayberry and when Andy sends them packing, they put a curse on Mayberry not to get any rain. When a drout occurs, the people start pressuring Andy into bringing the gypsies back.moreless

There's a nice old fashioned feel about this episode. It reminds me a little of when they first brought in the Darlings or the two party girls--characters that tended to disrupt Mayberry a little. Vito Scotti and Jamie Farr (who I think appeared in every major comedy show before landing M*A*S*H) are entertaining as the gypsies and the beautiful gypsy dancer gives Andy looks that would make most men melt. Although this episode is not great, I would have like to see them try and bring the gypsies back in some future show. Perhaps they would have lived up to the promise shown in this story.moreless

A treat to see the gypsies bedazzle the citizens of Mayberry with their curses and folklore--with Andy being the only holdout. He eventually forces them out of town, once he proves they are charlatans. A good episode (and interesting to see a young pre-MASH Jamie Faar) with some clever writing and interesting dialogues between the characters.
