This episode explores a similar theme as the previous one (The Manicurist): Mayberrites show their unfriendly side towards one person and then reform themselves. Poor Henry Bennett (played by John Qualen) is branded as a jinx by the townsmen. Beleagured by all the negative talk and people avoiding him, he tells the guys at the barber shop that he is leaving Mayberry. Although this is the only episode in which we meet Henry Bennett, John Qualen's performance is so good at provoking sympathy--you really root for him to stay and you appreciate that the town is willing to rig a lottery so that he can win it and not feel like a jinx anymore. It was also hilarious how Henry still manages to NOT win the lottery when--instead of getting a ticket from the hat, he pulls out the hat size tag instead!
