Episode Summary

The head of a local TV station enlists Aunt Bee to do a nightly cooking show, having heard about her cooking. Although she may not exude great professionalism, she has that extra "naturalness" that they're looking for. But her main concern is that someone suitable is cooking for Andy and Opie during her absence each evening. Unable to find someone, but not wanting Aunt Bee to back out of this opportunity, Andy (with Opie) maintains the pretense that a "Mrs. Parkinson" is on the job. Andy actually does the cooking -- to his and Opie's mutual gastric discomfort. After 2 days on the job, Aunt Bee shows unusual quickness of mind in seeing through the charade and finding a resolution.moreless

  • Aunt Bee The Gourmet

This is one of those episodes that could have been GREAT--but for the ending. Watching Aunt Bee become a local chef on t.v. while trying to arrange for Andy and Opie to have someone come in and cook for them, and then having to watch Andy TRY to cook for Opie is hysterical. There are some laugh out loud moments in this episode. It is one of Ron Howard's finest comedic moments--in response to his father's cooking he tells him that he's going to bone up on his vitamins...just be safe. That scene is priceless. The resolution of the story, with Aunt Bee somehow figuring out that there really isn't anyone cooking for them, and emerging from the kitchen, having quit her t.v. job is just a little too pat for me. I think they missed an incredible opportunity for more humor in the resolution of the episode. It felt almost as if the writers went to lunch, forgot what they were doing and then just ended it to make sure that Aunt Bee wasn't left at the studio!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • The stage manager instructed Aunt Bee that there are 2 cameras, and that she should smile towards the one with its red light on. But as Andy and Opie watch her show on TV, they see her occasionally pause, affect a smile, and cut her eyes left and right before settling on one of them -- never looking at the one that's obviously doing the actual broadcasting.

    • The theme song of Aunt Bee's cooking show can be heard in the background of many Andy Griffith Show episodes and was later used for its spinoff, Mayberry R.F.D.
