  • Generation Gap!

This episode features Leon Ames, the very accomplished actor, playing the gruff principal of Mayberry High School. He is quite marvellous in all his scenes and adds some depth to this average episode. Helen is finally given a storyline (and that's a good thing to see) and the musical numbers are quite good and entertaining. Andy is actually just a supporting character in this episode--which is why it probably lacks some of the usual "punch" and humor associated with this show.
  • Awful Season Seven Episode

Although it’s easy to dismiss or bash color episodes, many of them are actually quite enjoyable. “The Senior Play” however, is anything but. To begin with the story line is totally out of character for the series. Andy is a mere bystander in this episode as are most of the central cast members. Instead, we get an episode that tries to visualize the so-called generation gap and pound us over the head with some kind of moral significance. The performances by the two high school students is particularly ridiculous as these two come across more like out of work Broadway wannabes rather than rural, North Carolina high school kids. The play itself, at least what we see of it, is a mish-mash of silly limericks and a bunch of very dated dances. Aside from Goober’s final performance of his so-called imitations “Judy, Judy, Judy!” there’s very little to enjoy in this episode.
