  • The peaceful town of Mayberry..NOT!

    5.0
This episode does have some amusing moments but all in all it misses the mark too many times and meanders around so that we don't really get the meaning of it all. The basic humor of this episode that should have been shown is that the visiting preacher is talking about talking life more slowly, stopping to smell the roses. As I am watching this episode, a thought occurs, "isn't Mayberry the most relaxed town I've ever seen?" Wouldn't it have been funnier to have seen the people of mayberry try to relax more...and to discover that they already were living the message of the sermon? The most amusing scene is when Barney, Gomer and almost everyone begin to nod off during the visiting preacher's sermon--great physical comedy in that scene. Other than that, it's just one stretched out and far too corny plot devices.moreless

  • QUOTES (1)

    • Andy: You know what I believe I'll do? Run down to the drugstore and get some ice cream for later.
Barney: You want me to go? I'll go.
      Andy: No, I'll go.
      Barney: I don't mind going.
      Andy: I don't either. I can go.
Barney: You're probably tired. Why don't you let me go?
Andy: No, I'm not tired. I'll go.
Barney: I sure don't mind going.
Andy: Why don't we both just go?
      Barney: O.K.
      Andy: You ready?
      Barney: Uh-huh
      (Both rise slowly)
      Barney: Where we goin'?
Andy: Down to the drugstore to get some ice cream for later.

  • NOTES (2)

    • The Mayberry Band seems to be an ever evolving (or de-volving) thing. In a season two episode the band (with many of the same members as in this episode) was so awful they had to trick the Mayor into letting them go to competition. However, Aunt Bee mentions the band rather fondly, as if at some point they actually played well. Mayberry also sports a drum and bugle core that may have disbanded.

    • Gomer refers to his cousin Goober and talks more about him in this episode.
