This "once-a-year-day" series is a compendium of the greatest contributors to the performing arts since it's inception. The range of artists is extraordinary - Willie Nelson to Leontyne Price to Van Cliburn to Tennessee Williams, Jacques D'Amboise and Stephen Sondheim. Each year the show is the single best variety production on television, hands-down. Originally hosted by Walter Cronkite, the mantle has now moved to Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg who handles her part with grace. Any given year might find dramatic recitations followed by Broadway show tunes, then Symphonic or Chamber orchestras with and without choral groups, dancers of every variety - tap - ballet - modern. More often than one would imagine they even manage to get a marching band into the act. It's moving to see these great artists celebrated, often near the end of their lives. This is appointment television at it's best, even if it is on only once a year.
