    • News Item: Arsenio Hall Quits Late-Night Show Los Angeles, April 18 1994 (AP)

Arsenio Hall is quitting his television talk show, which fell victim in ratings and prestige to late-night competition from David Letterman and Jay Leno.

The last new show is to be shown on May 27, 1994, the Paramount Television Group said in a statement today. Paramount co-produces the show with Mr. Hall's own company.
Mr. Hall said in a statement that his decision to leave "The Arsenio Hall Show" was "the most complicated" of his life, adding, "Everything must change, and it's time".

His six-year contract was to expire in December. There were no negotiations to renew the deal, said a Paramount executive who spoke on condition of anonymity. Worried about declining ratings, Paramount was considering pulling the show after May sweeps, the executive said.

Mr. Hall 34, became the first successful black late-night talk show host. He showcased a variety of soul and rap musicians. The show, which made its debut on January 3, 1989, leaves at least one indelible image: Bill Clinton wailing away on his saxophone during the 1992 campaign.
