  • Why does it rain so very heavily in an isolated rural area, and why do Granny Gregson's Gorgeous Grogs have such unfortunate side-effects?

An utterly preposterous story, even by the standards of "The Avengers", but done with terrific brio and full of fun. Notice how cunningly the episode gives different accents to various characters to prevent us from localising the area where the story takes place - very Irish Noel Purcell and very Welsh Talfryn Thomas are both natives of the same village. The episode also features Sue Lloyd from "The Ipcress File" and a rather young-looking Geoffrey Palmer, a dozen or so years before he found TV fame. The chief villain, played by Albert Lieven, is a certain "Dr. Sturm", and, true enough, he does occasion quite a bit of Sturm Und Drang.moreless

    • Steed demonstrates his aptitude for working the pulping press.
Mrs. Peel: Did you know what you were doing, or I am just lucky?
Steed: Of course I knew. I'll show you. (Striding confidently over to the press.) Take one ordinary, common all garden bowler hat. (Throwing the hat casually into the open press.) One turns this knob here. (Fiddling with a knob on the machine.) Pushes up this leaver, and the gentle giant crashes down to stop within one thousandth of an inch of my bowler hat. (Pushes the leaver. The press rapidly descends and flattens the bowler.)

    • Mrs. Peel remains unperturbed at the impending threat of being drowned.
Eli: Mrs. Peel, it's you again. You should be preparing, the flood cometh.
Mrs. Peel: Yes, well I've put a down payment on a canoe.

  • NOTES (1)

    • The story from this episode was used for the 1998 Avengers movie. The villain, Sir Arnold Kelly, was changed to Sir August de Winter.
