  • Steed and Emma go into top gear and find it's a mad, mad world...

    9.0
Car chases and treasure hunts were a staple part of 1960s cinema, and this episode of "The Avengers" reflects that trend, with Steed and Emma searching, not for the "treasure" that (almost) everyone else is after, but for the other thing - secret information - which they know has been secreted within the treasure chest alongside the money. The episode has a splendid performance by the great Arthur Lowe as a slightly deranged car enthusiast - it's a genuine shock when this amiable character is abruptly murdered - and has a lot of high-quality stunt driving and more location work than was usual in British TV of the period (some of it amidst settings familiar from other "Avengers" segments).moreless
  • A Scavenger Race in the English countryside.Involves a foe who ultimately puts his enemies in a simulated racecar that sends electrical shocks to the steering wheel with each error.

    9.8
Embodies the spirit of the series.Fast-paced,breezy episode with Steed driving through the English countryside with a ditzy, whimsical aristocratic blonde.A little reminiscent of the '60's cartoon series'Wacky Races'.The villain lures his prey to a simulated race track projected on a movie screen on the wall .Bad news they have no choice but to race. They are strapped into an actual racecar. The penalty for driving mistakes is an electrical shock to the steering wheel. They're hands are strapped to the wheel. They must absorb the shock of their driving mistakes.Of course you can figure the rest. The villain turns up the speed to 200 mph and the voltage to critical levels.moreless
