  • Cathy finds herself alone in a creepy old house where the phone doesn't work and her host for the weekend has unaccountably not turned up...

Most of the cliches of the old-dark-house school of melodrama are present in this enjoyable episode, but faces are kept commendably straight, and attention is gripped throughout. Peter Hammond's direction is genuinely very stylish, especially in his use of unnerving props - a Venetian face-mask, a long-bladed cheese-knife, an antique clock. It's a pity about the welter of explanations at the end, which disrupt the mood of elegant menace, but the episode works far better than the later Diana Rigg segment, "The Joker", which uses the same plot. (The reason for this remake's existence was simple: the script for another story did not get completed on time.)moreless
