  • Lights! Camera! Murder!

Yes, yes, but why is mad film director Z.Z. Von Schnerk trying to make a film about the murder of Emma Peel? How does he even know who she is? She doesn't seem to know him, after all, and nor does Steed - and yet Z.Z. seems to know about him, too. For secret agents, our heroes are not very secret. One doesn't, of course, expect "The Avengers" to make sense, but it should, at its maddest, have an interior logic, which writer Brian Clemens here can't be bothered with. How does Steed know to go to the old abandoned film studio? How does he know where it is? Where do the three barking baddies live, how do they survive? Possibly Clemens and director James Hill could have trimmed a few of the movie parodies - why would a western be made in a British studio, anyway? - and put in some sort of a back-story to explain things. As it stands, it's amongst the silliest "Avengers" episodes ever, fun whilst it's running (especially during David Lodge's brief turn), but worryingly indicative of the way the series would decline in its final series.moreless
  • A bunch of crazy and wacky movie studio execs decide to capture Emma Peel and make a movie about her being killed on film.

    9.0
If you are a big Emma Peel fan, then this is an episode worth watching. Most of the episode is strickly with her in it. What makes this episode so good is its fun and querqy storyline. What can be more fun than have some crazy film director and equally loony actors want to put on a live film of capturing Emma and doing scene after scene of Emma getting killed, but missing each time. This episode, which is like many other Avengers episodes, makes fun of our heros and the past. In this episode, Epic, it makes fun of: big time Hollywood studios such as MGM, classic movies, monster movies, big time directors like D. W Griffith, and film stars of the 30's and 40's. An absolute pleasure to watch and the acting by the actors (the ones trying to kill Emma Peel) are so bad its hilarious as they perform in the movie being shot. A great Emma Peel episode.moreless
