The strange deaths of several astronomers, left bleached white, pose a problem. Whilst Steed joins the stargazers, Emma chases a bright light, and finds herself in the hot seat.
A hint of science-fiction informs this opening episode of the final Diana Rigg series, with the show now in colour. Could the various dastardly killings be the work of extra-terrestrials? The presence of Barbara Shelley, an iconic actress in both Hammer horrors and the 1960 cult movie "Village Of The Damned" (from a John Wyndham novel), is only too appropriate - but, alas, she's a red herring, and, despite prominent billing, is given too little to do. The laser beam was, in 1967, a fairly new invention, but, thanks to "Goldfinger", everyone knew what it was - so why does it take Steed and Emma so long to figure things out?moreless
This episode was filmed at Radlett Preparatory School in Hertfordshire.
Edit
Another similarity to Captain Scarlet happens when one of the astronomers is killed while looking through his telescope at Venus. In the Captain Scarlet episode "Shadow of Fear" an astronomer is killed in a similar manner at his telescope while watching the planet Mars.
Edit
The eerie sound effect used in this episode when the astronomers are killed is the same effect used in the Captain Scarlet episode "Attack on Cloudbase" (which aired just over a year after this episode) as the noise the Mysteron flying saucers make when they fire their weapons.
Edit
Steed is determined to join the British Venusian Society.
Venus: We are a very select group.
Steed: Good. I abhor overcrowding.
Venus: With stringent rules.
Steed: I shall obey them stringently.
Venus: And a very high subscription.
Steed: The sky's the limit, to coin a phrase.
