The title, of course, is a cheeky nose-thumbing at a rival American show (like "The Girl From Auntie", one of Diana Rigg's black-and-white episodes), whilst the plot owes something - rather a lot - to "Fantastic Voyage", a hit movie not long before, in 1966. This "Avengers" segment goes from eccentric to balderdash almost as soon as it's started, and never bothers with confusing us, even for a moment, as to the identity of its baddies. However, the old Incredible Shrinking Man/Gulliver's Travels format works once more as it had done before, and the behavioural charm of the actors counts for a great deal.moreless

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Tag: Watched by Steed, Emma adjusts the furniture in her apartment. Commenting that they could have used Rushton's reducer ray to make things easier to move, Steed adds, 'Never mind, we'll console ourselves with a gigantic feast.' When Emma notes that a storm is brewing outside, Steed cautions her not to worry - and hands her his miniaturised brolly!

    • Goof: Gifford places the miniaturized Rolls-Royce on top of the FV603, which in a later scene is bombarded by mortar shells. Then Steed picks up the Rolls-Royce from the exact same spot where Gifford left it. The shells should have blown the shrunken Rolls-Royce to bits, or at least changed its location.

  • NOTES (2)

    • After filming of the colour series was completed, Diana Rigg left the show and returned to Shakespeare, playing Helena in the 1968 Peter Hall production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' with Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Ian Richardson and Ian Holm. Not long afterwards she said, 'Television is so immediate. Within a week of appearing in my first Avengers story I was recognised by 90 per cent of the viewing public. A week after I'd left, I was unrecognised by 90 per cent of the public.'

    • In May, 1967 the 'The Avengers' was nominated in two categories for the Emmy awards - for the year's Outstanding Dramatic Series and Diana Rigg received a nomination for Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Series. However, 'The Avengers' was beaten in both categories by 'Mission Impossible', Barbara Bain beating Diana Rigg for the leading actress award.
