  • What's under the ground? More than you'd expect...

"Did your whole life flash before your eyes?" asks Emma, having rescued Steed from a firing squad at the last possible moment. "Yes," he imperturbably replies, "Extremely enjoyable." It's that quality of ineffable debonairness, coupled with insane plotting, that makes "The Avengers" so singular - nobody else ever managed it quite so stylishly, and, sad to say, "The Avengers" itself lost the knack in its post-Rigg episodes. Here, ghostly goings-on in a rural graveyard give way to the revelation of an underground city where the army of an Un-named Foreign Power is training to take over Britain. It's a little gory in its later stages (with Emma blithely machine-gunning a dozen or so villains), but mostly good fun.moreless

    • Tag: Steed, inspecting his parked Bentley, listens with interest as the 'mechanic' ferreting around beneath its bulk states, 'Just as I thought. There's the trouble. It's a ghost, sir. You've got a ghost in your engine.' Identifying the voice as that of his partner, Steed smiles as Mrs. Peel slides into view to share a glass of the proverbial champagne.

    • The opening teaser for this episode: Mrs. Peel is driving her car when she stops at a set of traffic lights that have turned to red. As they change to amber the words 'Mrs. Peel' appear. When they change to green it reads 'We're needed.'
