  • Why are dead men (or are they?) being replaced by lookalikes (or are they?), and why don't their wives object?

    8.5
A very typical episode from this phase of the show's history, with the ever-controversial issue of death duties - what in 21st-century Britain would now be called "inheritance tax" - being at the centre of a preposterously enjoyable series of plot convolutions. How can the spouses of the rich avoid paying large sums to the government once bereaved? The scheme concocted by the criminal gang known as "the Undertakers" is as ingenious as it's ridiculous, and all actors taking part contrive to keep their faces entirely straight throughout. As it became ever more famous, "The Avengers" grew ever madder - but it lost that straight face, which ultimately worked against it, artistically.moreless
