  • In an ordinary northern town, two schoolteachers find themselves involved in a mystery.

This was a follow-up to an earlier serial written by Alan Plater, "Get Lost", in which Alun Armstrong played a hapless woodwork teacher called "Neville Keaton", investigating a bizarre mystery in the unlikeliest of settings. Now, James Bolam is the teacher, and he's called "Trevor Chaplin", and once again there's a mystery spiralling out of control in a series of the most unlikely - because utterly prosaic - places. Our hero is aided by the feisty feminist intellectual from his school's English department - now played by Barbara Flynn and renamed "Jill Swinburne" - and keeps sane, despite all the peculiar events, through his love of jazz. An inventive opening to a terribly funny series, just about perfectly acted.moreless
