      • (Pearl says tells Jed and Granny if Brewster stays with her, if might be a way to get engaged to him) Granny: If Mr. Brewster stays with you and Jethrine, won't, won't people talk? Pearl: I hope so. Edit
      • (Jed is telling Brewster about his grandfather, who built his log cabin) Jed: He finished the cabin in the morning, went to town, found a girl, courted her, married her, and carried her 'cross that doorstep all before sundown. Tell me Granny, was that eighteen and ninety-seven or eighteen and ninety-eight. Granny: Eighteen and ninety-eight. Jed: Yeah, that's right. She was eighteen, and Grandpa was ninety-eight. Brewster: You say he was ninety-eight, and his bride was eighteen? Jed: That's right. Marriage didn't work out too good. Brewster: Well, I don't doubt it. Jed: Yeah. Grandpa made the mistake of havin' his Ma come live with em. Granny: Awful bossy old woman. Wouldn't let that little bride do nothin'. Did everything herself. (Jed and Granny head inside) Brewster: Your, uh, family has remarkable longevity. Pearl: Uh, yeah. They, they stretch the truth a little too. Brewster: Oh? Pearl: Grandpa wasn't a day over ninety when he married that girl. And his Ma didn't bust up the marriage. That poor, little bride just wore out, havin so many younin's to take care of. Edit
