Shorty Spits the Hook
AIRED:
The day of the wedding for Shorty and Elverna has come. Elverna is ecstatic, while Shorty is dreading it. When Jed and Shad wake him up and tell him it's his wedding day, he fights it. He hides in the bathroom, trying to find ways out. He can't escape in any way though. Shad gets the door off, and to keep Shorty in line, Jed and Shad tie him up. Meanwhile, at the bank, the brothers of Jean Bell, little brother Cookie and big brother Earl, come to question why Jean didn't get the bonus she was promised. Drysdale gives Jean the money she deserves. But he still has to get out of the bills somehow. To make everything look better to the Board, Jane suggests they shoot a commercial with the costumes, and Drysdale uses Jean. But her brothers see her rehearsing with Drysdale and think he is treating her horribly. Back at the mansion, Elverna says she is worried about Vegas because there is gambling there. And in her own family, there was a dilemma with it. Shorty overhears this and makes Elverna believe he is a gambler. Elverna runs out of the house and tells everyone the wedding is off. Shad and Jed realize that Shorty tricked his way out of marrying Elverna once again.moreless

      • Elverna: And here I am getting married for the second time at my age.
Granny: Just what age is that, Elverna?
Elverna: Well, between us Granny, I'll never see forty again.
Granny: Did ya catch a glimpse of fifty as ya passed it?

      • Elverna: Right in my own family, a happy marriage was broken up because of gambling.
        Jed: Really Elverna?
Elverna: My Aunt Bertha married a man who was the picture of propriety: sober, hard-working, church going. Together they saved a small fortune. And in one poker game they was completely wiped up.
        Granny: What a shame.
Elverna: Yes. Aunt Bertha was lucky in love, but a lousy poker player.

      • Shad: So come on out and marry Elverna.
Jed: Ya gotta admit, that beats dying, right Shorty? (silence) Shorty? (still no answer) Shorty?!
        Shorty: I'm thinkin' it over.

      • (Shorty is trying to get Shad to untie him so he can run away by offering him things)
        Shorty: I'll throw in Elverna!
Shad: What would I do with her?
Shorty: I don't know, but if you think of something, tell me.

      • (To get out of marrying Elverna, Shorty suggests throwing Jed a bachelor party)
        Jed: Who'd I marry?
Shorty: I'm glad ya asked me that.
        Jed: Never mind the answer!

      • (Shorty sneaks out for the third time, to be once again caught by Jed)
        Jed: Where ya goin', Shorty?
Shorty: Jed, don't you never sleep?!
Jed: Just about to ask you that.

      • Elverna: I don't dare go to Las Vegas with Shorty.
        Granny: Why?
        Elverna: He's an inveterate gambler.
Granny: Well, least ways he ain't a Yankee gambler.

      • (Elverna gives Shorty a big kiss to show the happiness in store for them, and then runs out giggling)
Jed: Well Shorty, I reckon that clinched it.
Shorty: It sure did. Tie me up again!

      • Jed: Forget about them girl's Shorty. Elverna's got everything they got.
Shorty: I wonder where she keeps it.

      • Jed: Your car is in perfect shape and so is Elverna.
Shorty: I'll believe that about my car, but it was never true to Elverna.

      • Jethro: I wanted to tie a pair of old shoes on the back and drag em behind the car, but Granny wouldn't let me.
        Jed: How come?
Granny: Cause, I was still in em.

      • (Jed is reading what Jethro painted on the side of Shorty's car for when he marries Elverna)
        Jed: "Las Vegas or Bust."
        Jethro: Ya like it, huh?
Jed: Hope Shorty don't think it gives him a choice.
        Granny: He'd take bust.

      • (Drysdale is talking to Jean's older and younger brothers, two very large men)
Drysdale: Well now, what do you fellas do?
        Earl: I play professional football.
Drysdale: Oh, say that is my favorite sport. You play too?
Cookie: No, I'm not big enough.

      • (Jed tells Shorty the alcohol in the bathroom is rubbing alcohol, and Shad says it's poison. Shorty just tried to escape, but Elly's bear is blocking the way)
Shorty: Dog gone it, I was hoping to get up enough nerve to fight that bear.

      • (Shorty says that he has been shaving, and Jed tells him he's been in the bathroom for an hour)
Shorty: I got a dull razor.
        Jed: It ain't that dull.
Shorty: It's so dull, I can't even cut my wrists.

      • (Shad wakes Shorty up)
Shorty: Where am I? What day is this?
Shad: This is the day ya marry Elverna Bradshaw.
(Shorty pulls the covers over his head)
