Season 1, Episode 1, Aired

Episode Summary

Jed Clampett's swamp is loaded with oil. When a wildcatter discovers the huge pool, Jed sells his land to the O.K. Oil Company and, at the urging of cousin Pearl, moves his family to a 35-room mansion in Beverly Hills, California. But when they get to their new home, which they think is a prison, and the gardeners are inmates, they are mistaken for vandals and get arrested. When Milburn Drysdale, president of the bank their money has been transferred to, finds out, he demands their release. Of course, he does not recognize Jed as a millionaire. He takes the family back to their house in the limo, but the Clampetts think they are being taken to prison. They run in the other direction and head for the hills.moreless

    "Great"
This is a very cute episode, and it made me really like this show. There are lots of funny lines in in and the actors' accents are great! I love how the Clampets (and family) are so clueless and silly. Jethro's hilarious and I love how he's six-foot-something and he's bragging about being in fifth grade. They're all just a hilarious hillbilly family who are in the entirely WRONG place. And that setup next to the rich bank manager is a very good setup for the show - they can surely annoy them beyond belief! But one thing I don't get is that if the bank manager knows the Clampets don't know a thing about anything modern, why is he so scared they're going to transfer banks? They barely even know what a bank is and he's scared they'll know enoough about switching banks that they'll do it? I was going to give it a 9.4 but because of that little thing I made it 8.9. Still, it was a great episode!moreless

    • Why is Cousin Pearl so much more cultured than the Clampetts, if only by a little? She knew what a million dollars was and about Hollywood. Though the Clampetts have no idea about what else goes beyond their borders it seems. Edit
    • In the first few episodes, Granny was made to look like maybe the oldest woman in the world. But after a few, Irene Ryan's make-up was toned down, so it didn't look exactly how it does in these early episodes. Edit
    • Bea Benaderet, who played Cousin Pearl, had originally wanted to play the role of Granny. When creator/writer Paul Henning and Ms Benaderet saw Irene Ryan's audition, Bea said to her old friend Paul, "There's your Granny." Edit

    • Brewster: Beverly Hills is the choice residential area, and lots of millionaires do settle there. Jed: Folks like me, huh? Brewster: Well, uh, millionaires. Edit
    • Jed: What do you think Pearl? You think I oughtta move? Pearl: Jed, how can ya even ask? Look around you. Ya eight miles from ya nearest neighbor. You're overrun with skunks, possums, coyotes, bobcats. You use kerosene lamps for light! You cook on a wood stove, summer and winter! You're drinkin' homemade moonshine, washin' with homemade lye soap! And your bathroom is fifty feet from the house, and you ask should ya move?! Jed: Yeah, I reckon you're right. Man'd be a dang fool to leave all this. Edit
    • Geologist: Listen, where's the nearest air field? Granny: Air field? Jed: You know Granny, that's one of them air fields, sets up in the air. Edit
