EDIT
The Italian Cook
AIRED:
Granny has been staying in Petticoat Junction, and her family is hungry. Elly May decided to take over the cooking, though her dishes are worse than eating nothing. The clan asks Granny to come home, but she says she can’t. So Jane suggests to Jethro that he hire a cook, and he ends up getting a gorgeous cook that only speaks Italian. The new cook, Maria, prepares delicious dishes for the family, but Granny does not know about this girl. She receives a telegram from Jethro that says the family is desperately starving and comes home right away. She sees the family eating spaghetti and thinks they are eating boiled string. She learns the telegram was a lie and chases Jethro out of the room, so Jed and Elly finish their meal.moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (2)

      • Granny thinks Jethro is eating boiled string, actually spaghetti. But in an prior episode, Jane is cutting Drysdale's hair and he has something covering his outfit, and Jethro figures he is eating spaghetti and that is a bib. All the Clampetts knew what spaghetti was then, but now with Maria, apparently they forgot.

      • When Granny is pumping the handcar to come home, in the background you can clearly see a fence. If she were mostly in the middle of nowhere, why would there be a fence blocking the woods off?

    • QUOTES (14)

      • (Granny is looking in at the baby, actually a puppy that climbed in the bassinette)
Granny: Sakes alive. And I thought Jethro was an ugly baby.

      • Granny: Howdy Mr. Drucker. Did you send for me?
Sam: Well yeah Granny. How'd you get here so fast?
Granny: I run. It's only six miles.
Sam: Why didn't you catch the train?
Granny: I did. I caught it, and I passed it.

      • (Maria ones again says Ciao to a family member, though Jethro and Jed think she means food)
Jethro: Yeah, she's gonna cook us up a storm.
Elly: Well, what's wrong with my cooking?
        Jethro: Should I tell her?
Jed: You better let me. Elly, your cooking is in a class by itself. Ain't nobody can touch it.
        Jethro: That's the truth.

      • (Granny leaves to go home to save her family and says she'll be back in the next full moon)
Steve: Did you understand what she was talking about?
Betty Jo: Not a word. But you have to admit there hasn't been a dull moment since she came to visit.
Steve: Yeah. Someday we oughtta visit her planet.

      • Jethro: Vittles is all she thinks about. Watch this. Howdy.
        Maria: Ciao.
Jethro: See, she must have mentioned chow at least a dozen times today already.

      • Jethro: And the stringy stuff is what us Italians call spaghetti.
        Jed: You Italian now?
Jethro: I told her I was. See, I aims to marry her. Italians are kinda clannish.

      • Maria: Next – dolce totoni.
        Jed: What she say?
Jethro: Oh. Something about a friend of her's named Tony.

      • Drysdale: You're fired!
        Jane: What for?!
Drysdale: For leaving your desk during your lunch break!
        Jane: But Chief.
        Drysdale: Where were you?
        Jane: Having lunch.
        Drysdale: That's no excuse!

      • Jethro: She don't speak much English, but I done learned Italian.
        Jed: Just today?
Jethro: Well yeah. You got to remember, this is the brain of a sixth grader. Now watch. I'm gonna call her in in genuine Italian. ( in an Italian accent) Bambina, bring-a yourself to the kitch. That's Italian for "Kitchen."
        Jed: Do tell.
Jethro: I picked up those foreign languages just like that.

      • (Jed puts a piece of Elly's Surprise Loaf in his boot)
Jed: Works dandy. That's what cha call real sole food.

      • (The dog runs out of the store, and Granny, not wearing her glasses, thinks it's the baby)
Granny: That little goomer might be homely, but he's the fastest crawler I've ever seen.

      • (Sam tells Granny she might have mistaken the puppy for the baby because she wasn't wearing her glasses)
Granny: Do you think I need these? I got eyes like a hawk. I only use em fer professional reasons. Folks don't trust a young lookin' doctor.

      • Jed: Oh Elly, I just thought of something. Jethro's gonna be awful hurt if I eat without him. I'll go find the boy.
Elly: Pa, Jethro ain't here. He took the truck and left.
        Jed: When'd he do that?
Elly: Well, I think it was right after I told him I was gonna cook a Surprise Loaf.

      • (Jethro takes another helping of spaghetti)
Elly: Want some red gravy on it?
Jethro: That ain't red gravy. That's what cha call marijuana sauce.

    • NOTES (2)

      • Mike Minor (Steve Elliot) would return in the last season to play unemployed actor Dick Bremerkamp.

      • The flashback where Granny sees the dog in the basinette first appeared in the Petticoat Junction episode,"Granny, The Baby Expert" when she thinks she has turned the baby into a dog.
