A The Big Bang Theory Community
Monday 8:00 PM on CBS (Returning September 19, 2016)

Carol Ann Susi, who voiced the never-seen Mrs. Wolowitz on The Big Bang Theory, died Tuesday after a short battle with an aggressive form of cancer, her agency announced. She was 62.

Born in Brooklyn, Susi studied acting at the HB Studio in New York and moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s to pursue an acting career. She played secretary Monique Marmelstein on ABC's The Night Stalker, and also had guest-starring roles on shows including CheersDoogie Howser, M.D.Mad About YouJust Shoot MeSeinfeld, and Six Feet Under.

On The Big Bang Theory, Susi played the mother of Howard (Simon Helberg), whose booming Brooklyn voice was a fixture on the show.

CBS and the producers of The Big Bang Theory released the following statement:

"The Big Bang Theory family has lost a beloved member today with the passing of Carol Ann Susi, who hilariously and memorably voiced the role of Mrs. Wolowitz. Unseen by viewers, the Mrs. Wolowitz character became a bit of a mystery throughout the show's eight seasons. What was not a mystery, however, was Carol Ann's immense talent and comedic timing, which were on display during each unforgettable appearance. In addition to her talent, Carol Ann was a constant source of joy and kindness to all. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with her family during this time, and we will miss her greatly."

Susi is survived by a brother.

If they don't write out the character by having her die on the show, I believe Melissa Rauch could fill in the vocal work quite well. The episode where she started talking like Howard's Mother was a very, very close sound alike.

It took you long enough to post this story. I saw it from everybody on Facebook before it showed up here.

I'm so sorry to hear of her passing. She brought me a lot of laughs over the years. She died way too young.

RIP Carol Ann Susi. Definitely gonna miss that voice. I loved hearing her and Howard scream (not just talk, but scream lol!) at each other in their own house.

Ms. Susi in her... second Kolchak appearance. "They Have Been, They Are, They Will be." Sadly, they dropped her after the 6th episode, and she only appeared in three of those six episodes.

That leaves Jack Grinnage as the only surviving main or recurring star from that series. And he's 83...

I know CBS loves to screw with us -- Sunday night is a good example. But if they own this website, why can't we know what's coming up and when in the next two weeks? Irate Grandma.

Sad news. Some of the funniest Howard moments on the show are with his mom whom he screams at in a hilarious way.I wonder if they will do the same on the show and have Howard's mom pass away or simply replace Carol Ann?But if they do have Howard's mom pass away, they should show Howard having a hard time dealing with it since his mom was always there for him growing up when his dad abandoned both of them.Show won't be the same without her 'unique voice'.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Not to be confused with the revival series.

Apparently she worked as a waitress and Darren McGavin found her and got her started as an actress.

First Mrs. Krabappel and now this.

So sad! The beautiful thing to do now is to let her die in the show. It will be a lovely way to show respect to the actor, by not replacing her. And it will give even more depth to the show.

Rest in peace.

They won't have to let her character die on the show, they can still mention her and Stuart but without having her actually talk.

or, as I mentioned above, I think Melissa Rauch could fill in.

So sad. She was Mrs. Wolowitz, they should kill off her character out of respect.

For those of you who know him, Warren Clarke of Dalziel and Pascoe has died, aged 67.

R.I.P.

I feel bad to said it.. but.. this is kinda good for the show.. 'cause they can recast and introduce a new actress in that important role. Hope now we can finally see Mrs. Wolowitz on the show (not just hear a voice).

Hope as well that they don't killed off this character.

She was seen once on the show...sort of. There was a scene at Howard's house where there was some kind of get-together and she was in the background seen from behind through the kitchen doorway. It always bugged me they then went on to imply she was very fat when she was not - carol or her character.

Killing her off on the show would be in poor taste - at this time anyway. If they do, they need to wait and write a proper episode for it. In the meantime, they can always allude to her character's whereabouts and what-not, such as being on vacation and what-have-you.

Since she has only been a voice, recasting would not be that terrible, but they do need to find the right one. Or, maybe Harvey Fierstein!?

Is there a screen shot/capture or video clip of this scene? What about the wedding one from the top aerial view? It didn't show much of her too.

I was actually thinking of another scene where there was more people involved and Howard's mother was wearing a blue sweater. I believe it was very early in the series - maybe in the first or second season. I could be wrong, but I am fairly sure it happened.

I forgot about this scene and she does appear to be heavier, if it was actually Carol Ann Susi, as she looks taller here.

Given as Howard isn't living at home and Stewart has a more minor role again this season they don't necessarily need to rush into recasting her (or killing the character off). She was a character who only ever had a handful of lines when she appeared and didn't appear regularly; more typically she would just come up in conversation. They could go awhile without needing someone to fill the role or explaining her absence.

I doubt we'll ever see her on the show, even if they do recast the character. She's a bit of a Maris - no one they cast could ever compare to what the viewers have imagined based on how she's been described.

Actually the 90s were exploded with shows that had an unseen character. Maris was but one.

You had Mr.Bell on Drew Carry
Fran's dad on Nanny
The neighbor on Home Improvement
etc etc

Most of them were seen in either the final episode (or season) of the show or at least in their final appearance of the show (as is the case of Mr.Bell)

Someone that you never ever see like Maris, was actually a lot rarer (assuming the show wasn't canceled prematurely)

Which is why I compared her specifically to Maris. The reason why you never saw Maris and never would was because she'd been described in such a way that they realized they'd never be able to find an actress who would live up to how the character had been described. There are a few other characters who you never saw in anything but the briefest of moments; Al's mother on Home Improvement, the Ugly Naked Guy on Friends, Stan in Will and Grace, Norm's wife in Cheers, Harpo on The Sopranos, etc. Maris is, in my opinion, just the quintessential example; she's one that people seem to always know.

Once upon a time, a LONG long time ago, Happy Days had a never-seen character, Joanie's friend Jenny Piccolo who was always getting in trouble. Near the end of the series, as they were running out of original cast members, they cast her and put her on screen. By then, of course, the show had jumped the shark. (Really, for those of you not fully familiar with the origin of the phrase, Happy Days had an episode where a character actually jumped a shark (on waterskis).)

I refuse to believe that there are people who don't know where that phrase comes from.
That said, there are some never seen characters who could be seen without detracting from the backstory of the character, and there are others who can't. I think any attempt to show Howard's mother on screen - beyond the briefest of glimpses that we've been given - would take away from her, just like if they'd ever shown Al's mother in full on Home Improvement.
