The Big Breakfast

Show Summary

The Big Breakfast was a live magazine show, which aired on Channel 4. Since it's first show, it provided many of today's TV's stars with their big break; Chris Evans, Gaby Roslyn, and Johnny Vaughan all found greater fame since hosting the show. The show's greatest novelty was it's setting; a former terrace of 3 cottages in East London, once lived in by the lock keepers of the Old Ford Lock on the Lees Navigation Canal. The show was presented from the living room, with interviews by the fireplace, round the kitchen table, and on the bed in the boudoire. They even presented from a shed at the bottom of the garden. The show was set apart from others by it's wacky and colourful presentation, and was nominated for, and even won, along with it's presenters, several awards. The show was then axed by Channel 4 at the height of its popularity with the fans.

i used to love waking up every morning to watch the big breakfast, it was so different compared to the boring gmtv and bbc breakfast news. i used to love all the features on the show and one that sticks in my mind is the johnn and denise games we used to have. more tea vicar and gaggin for it were classics. but pretty much the whole show was a classic. i do think a couple of times the show went downhill and that was after johnny and denise left together and the house was redesigned (for the second time unsuccesfully i think) but picked itself u again when richard bacon and amanda byron brought the fun back into the breakfastmoreless

Channel 4 started this programme to be aimed at teenagers, or as labour calls us 'young adults'. The programme was an instant hit.

I always used to watch it, it was pure laughter from the moment i woke up, and i really felt miserable when i realised i'd miss half of it by going to school.

Chris Evans was the perfect host for the show, truely hilarious, but his career has gone dead recently, but now he's on the move up.moreless
  • The show was a national institution for the ten years it was on air. We love you Big Breakfast!

The Big Breakfast was admirable because it did everything the other shows did not, right down to the hand-held cameras and outrageous outside broadcasts.

It is a testament to the show that so many people launched careers by presenting it - names such as Chris Evans, Johnny Vaughan, Denise Van Outen, and Amanda Byram come to mind.
