  • Finally, some forward momentum

For awhile, it felt as if "The Big C" was making stuff happen in the show by having the characters do nothing. I think Laura Linney is fantastic in the role and the show has some moments of inspiration with their guest stars and supporting cast, but for the most part, the first half of the show's first season hasn't done much but follow Cathy through dealing with her diagnosis. And by not telling anybody except Marlene, there are moments were you'd just wish she'd tell somebody.

However, tonight's episode proved that the show is finally starting to introduce a few different plotlines and get the plot moving forward. For one, Cathy is still spending time with the painter from her school which is inciting jealousy from Andrea. We also find Sean staying in Cathy's backyard for the time-being after being beaten up at a park. As for Cathy's family, she finds herself finally getting back on track. She finds herself becoming closer and closer to Paul, and just as things seem to be getting better, he reveals a secret: he had some.. well, extra-marital activities with the "rugby slut." The episode was great in the way they built us up to believe we may finally see Cathy share her secret and then laugh in our faces as they throw another obstacle in our way.

Of course, Cathy's anger at Paul's infidelity is ironic, especially since she's sleeping around with the painter from her school. Idris Elba does a good job as the British painter and I wonder how much longer he'll stay in the show. I also wonder how much longer we'll have to wait until Cathy admits her sickness to somebody. I understand the writers aren't doing it yet to build suspense, but after a certain point, it just gets a bit irritating.

But I must admit that this was one of my favorite episodes of the show to yet. For me, the show is nothing revolutionary and isn't anywhere near being a "must-see" show, it's entertaining and well-acted enough to keep coming back to.moreless
