  • Class envy + media distortion = wrongfully accused Heath

"There's only one step from envy to hate, Mr. Archer, and I think you've taken that step." So states Dame Victoria Barkley to a bitter and biased lawman who has Heath arrested and held on murder charges. For a series supposedly set in 19th century Stockton, this episode struck close to contemporary culture with its life lessons.

When Heath invites a former sweetheart to dine on lobster and champagne with him, she omits telling him one key part of her life: she's married - and to a green-eyed monster who happens to be a sharpshooter. When Heath rushes to her aid, he ends up being accused of killing the man cold. It's up to Jarrod and the rest of the family to prove Heath's innocence against a town poisoned with prejudice against him and the wealthy Barkley family.

Hurray for suspense, action, and a surprisingly insightful dialogue in the closing scene between Victorian and Heath in this episode. The best part of all, though, is when Nick gets growly with the newspaper owner, refusing to take even an inch of his twisted spinning. If only we had a few more Nick Barkleys today to rough up the bottom-feeding press!
