      • The second of Lee Majors' three "Big Valley" whippings takes place in this episode. (The first came at the end of "Legend of a General Part 1" on 9-19-66 and the third can be found in the 12-18-67 episode, "Journey into Violence.") Unjustly imprisoned in a work-camp along with Nick Barkley, Heath earns the enmity of the corrupt camp commander who has him flogged as punishment for a "breach of conduct." Heath stands between two posts, his arms upstretched and tied to the crossbeam which joins the tops of the two posts. A guard stands behind him and, as Nick looks on in helpless anguish, delivers five lashes to Heath's back before the scene fades out. Curiously, Lee Majors wears a shirt in this scene, even though flogging victims are usually stripped to the waist and even though Majors had obviously been cast as "Heath" partly because of his "beefcake" value. The effect of the whipping itself is accomplished through a simple use of perspective. The flogger stands behind his victim but the camera remains in front of the victim. This means that the whip isn't quite long enough to actually make contact with the victim's back. It snaps harmlessly through the air but it convincingly makes a cracking noise and when the actor playing the victim jerks and grimaces at the right moment, the illusion of an actual whipping is complete.
