Episode Summary

Don't Like Mondays
PC Edwards and PC Smith are called to a disturbance at a local bank, where they are surprised to find Tosh Lines' wife and children causing a commotion as there is no money left in their account. Edwards makes a discrete call to Sgt. Peters, who suggests to Tosh that he head down to the bank and sort things out. As PC Ramsey and WPC Ackland also arrive, the bank is raided by an armed gang. Tosh Lines arrives and charges towards the bank, but as PC Ramsey runs to stop him, he is shot in the chest by one of the robbers. Ch. Insp. Conway negotiates with the gang as armed PT17 officers surround the building. Sgt. Cryer offers to drive the getaway car, but disconnects the ignition when he leaves it at the bank entrance. PC Smith and the other hostages are released, but PC Edwards is taken hostage. He manages to makes a run for it and the PT17 officers open fire on the car.moreless

  • PC Ramsey - anti hero.

Don't Like Monday's starts off like any other standard episode as PCs Ramsey and Ackland pull over a suspicious driver.

PCs Smith and Edwards are called to the London Capital Bank where Tosh Lines' wife is causing problems over her bank balance and shortly after resolving the issue, the bank is raided and the occupants are taken hostage.

The best section of the episode comes from when the Ramsey and Ackland arrive at the bank (Ramsey is nearly run over by the getaway van) through to when he is shot by trying to keep Tosh from entering the bank. We all know they are acting, but the performances and direction are so well done it is very believable.

The episode also benefits from not dwelling to much on the negotiations and we never see inside the bank once the raid has taken place. All the excess baggage of getting to know the robbers etc. that would probably appear in an episode today and has appeared in subsequent episodes are missing - probably to keep the episode at 30 minutes.

An exciting episode and well worth watching again and again.moreless

    • The Lines children are played by the real-life children of Kevin Lloyd, who plays D.C. Lines. Oldest child James would join the cast as P.C. Steve Hunter fifteen years later.

    • The character played by Natasha Williams (the typist who is telling Tosh off) is listed in the credits as "Delia France". When she returns to Sun Hill as a WPC, the character is named "Delia French".

    • The same radio sound effect is in a number of scenes in this episode. Listen out for the radio chatter that includes the phrase "Victor 1-1". This single sound effect features over the theme tune in the 1998 version of the opening credits and in many later episodes, notably in ambulance and CAD scenes, and including the P.C. Vicky Hagen departure storyline from 2001.
