Search Me
AIRED:
There has been an outbreak of street robberies and stop and search (or stop and talk) is being resumed. Ch. Supt. Mannion asks Ch. Supt. Brownlow to stand in for him for a TV interview. The interview shows footage of the police carrying out two stop and search operations. Brownlow tries to shift some of the blame on his troops, which is greeted with some displeasure. To show the troops that he leads from the front, Brownlow and Ch. Insp. Conway decide to lead from the front and head onto the streets in the C.I.D. car. They respond to a call and collar one of the street robbers. The other robber hops onto a bus and Brownlow gets uniform to stop the bus, leading to some ribald comments about Brownlow arresting them by the busload. Mannion announces he's setting up a special unit to combat street robberies in the area.moreless

  • A television appearance causes problems for Brownlow and the relief, leading him to go out on patrol with Conway.

    10
Brownlow's adversary Guy Mannion asks him to step in at the last minute on a late night discussion show leading him to put the blame on the failures of 'Stop and Talk' on his relief.

Matters are further complicated when the son of the MP he appeared with on the show is arrested for a series of muggings that he wasn't involved with.

With the relief feeling ever more under pressure and that they do not have the support of management, Brownlow decides to go out on patrol with Conway and they ultimately arrest the two thiefs (and a bus!).

Peter Ellis and Ben Roberts shine in this episode, given more material than usual to flesh out their characters. Their exchanges throughout the episode are excellent and tongue in cheek especially when they leave the confines of the station to go on patrol towards the end of the episode.

Looking back there are three cameos worthy of note, newscaster Martyn Lewis plays...... a newscaster (that adds a touch of realism), Hustle's Ashley Walters appears as David Dexter's son and Ofo Uhiara makes an appearance as a youth who is stop and searched twice (his character a distinct difference to Lance Powell who he would go on to play).

Simply the summary above doesn't give the episode justice.

The episode stands up among the rest and deserves the 10 marking i hae given it. If there was ever a 'Best Of' compilation of the last 25 years, this should be in it.moreless
