Episode Summary

EDIT
Bob wants to watch football every Monday night. Emily feels this is unfair: their other activities keep the couple busy or exhausted every other night of the week, and she thinks they should do something that they both enjoy. This leads to an unresolved, all-night argument that ends only when the two participants become exhausted.moreless

  • This episode gives great insight into Bob and Emily's relationship.

In this classic episode of the series Emily is angry with Bob because he insists on watching Monday Night Football, taking away one of the few evenings they have to spend together. She reminds Bob that when they got married they vowed that they would never go to bed mad, so neither one of them can go to bed, since she's mad. I like the insight into the Hartley's marriage. We find our they are not perfect. However, they don't yell at one another. Instead they use several methods to try to resolve the conflict. My favorite is when they each write down what bothers them about the other person. Bob writes one line, while Emily fills both sides of a piece of paper. Eventually they are too tired to argue any more. They didn't find a solution, and I think Emily briefly shows disapproval of Bob's watching football in later episodes. I think this episode gives us a good example of how to resolve conflict.moreless

    • (Jerry turns on the TV)
      Emily: Bob, is that football?
Jerry: Bob, come on. They're introducing the starting line-up.
Bob: In, in a minute Jerry.
Emily: It is football. But, today is Monday. The game was yesterday.
Bob: This is, um, Monday Night Football.
Emily: Oh no. Has it been a year already?

    • Carol: All my plants do so well in your office. I guess it's the vibes in here. I mean, they listen to your patients' problems and troubles all day; it makes them feel emotionally superior.
Bob: I'm glad to help out your leafy friends, but don't you think it's getting a little humid in here? I can't keep a crease in my pants.

    • Emily: (to Bob & Jerry after they try to explain how football works) Boys, you've got yourselves a dumb game.
