    Sad

Suzanne Pleshette, the husky-voiced star best known for her role as Bob Newhart's sardonic wife on television's long-running "The Bob Newhart Show," has died at age 70.

Pleshette, whose career included roles in such films as Hitchcock's "The Birds" and in Broadway plays including "The Miracle Worker," died of respiratory failure Saturday evening at her Los Angeles home, said her attorney Robert Finkelstein, also a family friend.

Pleshette underwent chemotherapy for lung cancer in 2006.

I'm so sorry to hear about her passing. She's the first of the major stars of the show to go. What a beautiful woman she was.

She and Bob had a great chemistry on the show. They couldn't have picked a better actress for the role of Emily.

What a great actress, not just on Bob Newhart but in her numerous other TV and film appearances. I especially liked her as the first femme fatale on The Wild Wild West. To echo previous posters, her work on Bob Newhart and with the cast of that show was simply brilliant. An inspired choice, and Emily and Bob Hartley were one of TV's all-time best couples. This was thanks in no small part to Ms. Pleshette. Her parting is sad, but we can take comfort that she is reunited with her husband, the late Tom Poston. If Heaven has a sitcom troupe, it just got a terrific member.
