  • sets the tone for the series

The first 5 episodes need to be watched in order. This one sets up the Beamish-Tempest relationship for the rest of the series when they have to defend the Fort against "at least a dozen" raiders. Which is really a very energetic and inventive teenage boy firing from several different locations.

The opening is Beamish, reading off his report to the Admiralty of the success and serenity he's managed to bring to the island. He paces the room, humming happily. Naturally, a shot rings out as he reaches that line. Highlights - Tempest and Beamish loading and firing their guns, moving around the perimeter, generally protecting the area, all the while bickering like an old married couple.

Beamish climbing over Tempest and using his back as a firing platform. And he does it twice. Both supporting the other, knowing what they have to do, but still bickering over the lack of proper defense that brought the raid about. Tempest blames Beamish for not taking action sooner. Beamish claims he will not give any authority to a Pirate.

Of course, a letter comes the next day authorizing Tempest as a King's Privateer. Beamish realizes he has to learn to work with Tempest for the protection of the island. But he doesn't have to like it.
