The Captain and Tennille

Show Summary

Pop music stars Captain and Tennille hosted their own ABC-TV variety series which premiered in September, 1976 and ran through March, 1977. On Monday nights at 8pm, you could find much of the United States tuning in to watch Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille perform musical numbers and comedy sketches with various guest stars. The hour long show aired opposite of NBC-TV's "Little House On The Prairie," and CBS-TV's "Rhoda" and "Phyllis" comedy block.

The entire series consisted of 20 episodes of which the final 8 were produced by Dick Clark. The opening musical theme song was set to an orchestrated version of Captain & Tennille's Grammy winning hit song "Love Will Keep Us Together." Every show closed with the first verse of their own composition entitled "We Never Really Say Goodbye." Their series was a ratings success and could have continued beyond the first season. Instead, Captain & Tennille opted to focus on their music and touring career. After the initial run of The Captain & Tennille Variety Show, they starred in 3 follow-up ABC-TV specials, two of which aired in the spring of 1978 and the third in March 1979.moreless

  • Great Show

At the time this show came out I thought I was to cool for it. Today when I watch the DVD of the show I realize life was much simpler then and grow nostalgic for this period.

I thought I saw this more than I did. I presumed it was my memory loss. I look at the summary and the show was on the same time Little House was. My family were diehard Prairie fans. I am only guessing the repeats were on and we switched channels to this. I personally preferred Sonny & Cher over this one, but it was quality stuff of the time.
  • What other people say about The Captain and Tennille doesn't bring it any justice. To give it anything less than a 10 would be an outrage.

What other people say about The Captain and Tennille doesn't bring it any justice. To give it anything less than a 10 would be an outrage. What's good about it? If you need me to tell you what's good about it, it means you can't even tell the brilliance behind The Captain and Tennille. Nuff said.
