About ten minutes into the show, I was kicking myself for having not started the VCR. It was clear that this was going to be a disaster of epic porportions--the kind of thing you tell people about for years to come.
The show opened with Chevy being honored by putting his hand prints in cement. Naturally, he slipped, going head first into the watery concoction. Didn't smell that one coming, did you?
After an awkward, giggly interview with his pal Goldie Hawn, they began to dance. Not some comedy dance, mind you--just some gliding around the stage for what seemed like an eternity while the audience wildly applauded. It just kept going and going, as if the show was already running terribly short and they had to fill with something. Extra commercials would have been a nice choice.
There are some basic skills any performer must have to host a talk show. You must be quick witted, able to put a guest at ease, know how to move a show along--and most importantly, be likeable. Those aren't Chevy's skills. His condescending, smart-ass routine can work in movie roles, but when playing a real person, he just seemed bored and bothered.
