      • This play was subsequently expanded by authors Richard Levinson and William Link into a full-length stage play, retitled "Prescription: Murder". It toured widely in the US in 1962. In this version, the murderous doctor (Joseph Cotten) was intended as the leading character and Lt. Columbo was, as in "Enough Rope", a supporting role (now played by Thomas Mitchell). In his autobiography "Vanity Will Get You Somewhere", Cotten wryly noted that, as rehearsals went on, it became less of a play about a doctor who kills his wife and is caught by a wily police detective and more of a play about a wily police detective who catches a wife-killer doctor. Mitchell's death in 1962 prevented the play from getting to Broadway, but, a half-decade or so later, it was turned into a TV movie with Peter Falk now playing Columbo. The rest, as they say, is history.
