The Chinese Detective

Show Summary

Welcome to The Chinese Detective guide at TV.com. The Chinese Detective remains the only British television drama to feature a Chinese lead. The Chinese Detective told the story of Det. Sgt. John Ho, a maverick police officer prepared to use unorthodox methods to solve his cases. Ho is a British-born man of Chinese descent, and is portrayed as a fully assimilated individual who respects his cultural heritage. When asked where he is from, Ho replies, "I'm Cockney." The series offers glimpses of Chinese culture and tradition and depicted the racism and other pressures faced by officers from an ethnic minority but did not play up any racial stereotypes, allowing consideratons of race to be circumvented in favour of strong storylines.
