The City (1999)

Show Summary

The City aired on Canadian networks from March of 1999 until June of 2000. Although often confused with the short-lived American spin-off daytime drama The City (1993 - 1995), Canada's primetime soap The City was a gritty drama set against a Toronto backdrop.

Lawyer Katherine Strachan Berg is the central character of the show, and much of the first season focuses on her relationship with her husband, real estate tycoon Jack Berg, and her son, Strachan. She gets one heck of a shock when her former lover (now a priest), Shane Devlin, comes back into her life, and it's Katherine and Shane's former relationship, and Strachan's true paternity, that got this show off on the right foot.

Although the show didn't do too badly in the ratings, both it and Power Play were cancelled to be replaced with two newcomers -- Paul Gross' Steelstring (which never did hit the airwaves) and The Associates (which, like The City, was cancelled after only two seasons).

Although it's also been refered to as Flesh and Blood (the working title) and Deep in the City (the American title), on Canadian networks, it was always just The City.
