Although rumors surrounding the show swirled for months before, it wasn't until October 9th 2008 that MTV officially announced that The City had been given the greenlight.
Whitney Port's former boss, Kelly Cutrone of the notable public relations firm People's Revolution, was offered the chance to star alongside her one time protégé in The City but opted to focus on new projects instead.
MTV released two trailers to promote this show. The song that plays over the first teaser is called "Story" by Jeanette Thulin. The second trailer featured the song "Carousel" by Paper Route.
Whitney Port was not MTV's first choice to star in this reality series. Originally, actress Natalie Portman and her boyfriend, musician Devendra Banhart, were slated to star in MTV's reality soap. At the last minute they dropped out, and Whitney was chosen to lead the spin-off with boyfriend, Jay Lyon.
