The premiere of "The Hills" spin-off, "The City," has finally debuted with California girl Whitney moving to New York City to work for Diane Von Furstenburg. As a fan of "Laguna Beach" (Seasons 1-2) and "The Hills," MTV has kept up with creating a show centering around another likable cast member and chronicling their day-to-day life. Although there were a few flaws that made the show seem kinda bland, I see the show having a lot of potential in the future. The villianess of the series is without a doubt socialite Olivia Palermo. Her icy glares and snappy remarks made the show interesting to watch. I'm dying to see what influence she will have on Whitney in the future as she sets out to prove that New York is not at all like California. Also, Whitney's love life is explored which was rarily done on "The Hills". I hope the show does well even though at times I miss those cozy Lauren and Whitney chats followed but the random faces of Whitney.moreless
  • The show has some flaws, but could eventually develop into a good series.

I was worried about whether or not Whitney Port could lead a successful reality show on MTV. At first glance The City, as the show is simply dubbed, seemed like Gossip Girl with less-interesting characters. It also felt less "real" than The Hills.

But The City is intent on sticking too the same mold that the two California predecessors did with the blonde (First Kristin, then Lauren, now Whitney), the friend (Audrina and now Erin, who even looks like her) and the spoiled villain (Heidi and now Olivia). This formula can only go on for so long. And what was up with Olivia's cousin Nevan who thought he was Jeremy Piven?

The City does have an upside though as Whitney is a likable character. Not as pretty or funny as some Laguna Beach or The Hills girls, not as charismatic either, but you root for her to "win" and find happiness and be able to tame Jay and have a healthy relationship with her. She's a good protagonist I only worry that she'll grow boring after a few episodes as we're used to her only talking to Lauren for two minutes every week.moreless
