The Classics: Dick Tracy

Show Summary

The Classics: Dick Tracy is a television series running from 1950 to 1951 on ABC based on the popular Chester Gould comic book character who brings to bear his square jaw, yellow fedora and raincoat, three piece suit, two way radio wrist watch and razor sharp detective skills when butting heads with an eclectic rouge's gallery of quirky and formidable foes. This incarnation starred Ralph Byrd as the intrepid flatfoot who gives the average gumshoe a run for his money. Joe Devlin plays his associate, the aptly named Sam Catchem. One of the most memorable villains in the 'Dick Tracy' comic strip was Heels Beals, a midget who smuggled jewelry in the hollowed-out heels of his platform shoes. Several different classic villains from Gould's strip are all portrayed here (interchangeably) by Lyle Talbot in various episodes, and the role of the Mole is grossly miscast with veteran character actor Raymond Hatton.
