Brenda mentions to Hawthorn that if he doesn't like the size of the elevator, he's going to like the gas chamber even less. Although in California the gas chamber is an acceptable form of execution, lethal injection is the primary method, and is the method that is used unless the gas chamber is specifically requested by the prisoner. In fact, out of the 12 people that have been executed since lethal injection was adopted by California in 1993, only one person has chosen the gas chamber.
