At the beginning of the episode, the Rapid Response Office explains to the camera that they were called out because of a "possible 187." 187 is the police scanner code for a homicide.
Scanner codes are drawn from corresponding sections of the California Penal Code; Section 187 defines murder, and establishes what a person is for the purposes of applying the definition.
Goof: Provenza notes the only income Dr. Wallace had was from the publication of articles in academic journals. In reality, academics are not paid for these publications, since they are generated as part of university or grant work.
In his June 18 blog, James Duff tells us Buzz' official title is Civilian Surveillance Coordinator.
The house used as the Wallace home once belonged to Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, and was the home where they raised their sons David and Rick. The 5 bedroom house, now valued at $4.1 million, is located at 1822 Camino Palmero in the Hollywood Hills. It served as the model for the fictional Nelson home in the 1950/60's TV series "The New Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet." The bedroom used as Eric's bedroom was originally Rick's, and the cast was able to see where he had carved his initials in the bedroom wall.
This is the first time that the Priority Homicide Division is referred to as "PHD" by one of its members; Lt. Flynn uses the term while shooting the video for the court. Usually the squad is referred to as "Priority Homicide" by members of the unit.
Sanchez: (just before Brenda enters the interview room) Little Justin says his father is a lawyer. Just so you know.
Brenda: (entering the room) Good morning, Mr. Darcy, I'm Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, LAPD, and I have brought you here this morning to talk about rape.
Justin: I haven't raped anyone. Ever.
Brenda: I have a statement alleging sexual assault from the victim.
Justin: (arrogantly) Do you know how stupid that is? All right, I think I should get my one phone call and talk to my dad. He's a criminal attorney, OK? So, I think I know a bit more about the justice system than the average person you drag in here.
Brenda: (chuckling) Lt. Flynn, would you please hand Mr. Darcy your phone? As I am sure you're aware, Mr. Darcy, given your vast knowledge of the law, the age of consent for male/male sex in the state of California is 18.
Justin: (dialing Flynn's phone, and still arrogant) I'm 19. In two months.
Brenda: Many happy returns. Eric Wallace, the boy who you are currently 'tutoring', is 17. Make sure you tell your father that the charges against you will include, but not necessarily be limited to, statutory rape and sex with a minor. I look forward to meeting your family. I can only imagine how proud they'll be.
Chief Pope: (after hearing Gabriel's plan to transfer Brenda's team to the Counter Terrorism Bureau, then assign them back to PHD) You know, Sergeant, for a bureaucrat, this is the equivilent of turning water into wine. My only question is why you are here suggesting it instead of Chief Johnson?
Gabriel: (uncomfortably) Uh, well, sir...I thought she might like this idea better if she thought it was...
Chief Pope: My idea. I see you've worked out every detail, including who she is going to blame. That's real genius.
Pope: Consider, just for a moment, a world in which you work for me, and what I need is important, too....Every section has to lose at least one detective.
Brenda: You don't mean MINE?
Pope: Yes, I do mean you, Brenda, EVERY SECTION.... So, what do I have to do to make you agree with me?
Brenda: Stop being wrong!

The financial crisis the LAPD must confront is part of one the State of California has faced in recent years. Although now past its most critical phase, the budget crisis was an outgrowth of significant overspending by the state government in the early 2000's, a weak economy and the bursting of the "dot com" bubble of the late '90's. California's financial woes, along with the electricity mismanagement of 2000 and 2001 ultimately contributed to the recall of former Governor Grey Davis and the election of now-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in October, 2003.
Lompoc, California is located about 175 miles north of Los Angeles, and about 50 miles north of Santa Barbara, in Santa Barbara County. The area is largely agricultural, and is known for its flower industry. Tourism is a major industry in the area, and nearby are the Danish village of Solvang, Buellton, the home of Anderson's Split Pea Soup and a thriving wine industry featured in the film "Sideways." Vandenburg Air Force Base is also located in Lompoc. Originally scheduled to be the west-coast base for Space Shuttle launches, Vandenburg AFB has long been the location of the USAF missile test program, providing southern Californians with some spectacular evening light shows during the program's heyday in the 1960's and 70's.
The Federal Prisons at Lompoc and Terminal Island figure in this story. Both are administered by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The Lompoc Federal Corrections Complex is made up of two institutions: the US Penitentiary Lompoc, a high security prison with a minimum security satellite, and the Federal Corrections Institution Lompoc, a low security prison, all housing male inmates.
FCI Terminal Island is also a low security prison for male inmates. Terminal Island is located at the mouth of the Los Angeles Harbor, off the coast between San Pedro and Long Beach.
This season marks an additional credit for Kyra Sedgwick: she now serves as a producer in addition to her acting role as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson.
This episode marks a change in the opening cast credits: Michael Paul Chan (Lt. Tao), Raymond Cruz (Det. Sanchez) and Gina Ravera (Det. Daniels) all appear in the main credits. In Seasons 1 & 2, they were listed as either guest stars or were added after the "title card" credits.
