Episode Summary

Sergeant Gabriel is an unwitting witness to the murder of a parole board member when he answers a misdialed call for help. 7.5
When Commissioner Ross is murdered, Chief Pope seems more concerned with solving the crime - NOW - than with how he treats anyone in the process. Fed up, Brenda tells him to take over the investigation and he takes her up on it, promptly filling the team's office space with countless law enforcement personnel. Brenda finds an ally in Commander Taylor and she and her displaced team are forced to improvise to find working space. The options include Brenda's house and Pope's conference room, where they slowly begin to piece together an entirely different story of the killing.

The thing that struck me about the episode is that Pope lost his focus and his objectivity (and his temper). It came across as if he wanted a swift solution so he that he wouldn't look bad rather than just letting Brenda and her team do their jobs.

His horrible treatment of most everyone around him cost him a lot of respect and perhaps Brenda's support for his career goal. And, he showed at the end that he doesn't get it. I think the fact that he so capable of misusing the power he now has shows that he in no way should be given more.

It wasn't my favorite episode because I prefer the ones where there is some humor and except for Brenda chasing Joel away from the 'people food,' this one didn't really have any.

    • Brenda: Look, Will, for your own sake, just take a deep breath, okay? I-I know you're feeling some extra pressure because of this whole chief business...
Pope: So now, on top of everything else, you're accusing me of overreacting?! You want to know what I think? I think your own reaction to this case has been slow, unimpressive, and potentially dangerous to the rest of the parole-board members in the state.
Brenda: Okay! That's it! You don't like the way I'm handling this case, that's just fine. You should just take it over yourself.
Pope: You know what? That's exactly what I'm gonna do.

    • (at the conclusion of the case)
Brenda: I hate to say this, Will, but this whole Chief selection process, it has not brought out the best in you. And if this is how you intend to run the Department, I'm not even sure it's a job you should have.
Pope: Well, do you think you could do better?
Brenda: I'd be really disappointed if I couldn't.

    • (Brenda and her team are working at her house when Provenza calls her from the station.)
Brenda (answers phone): Deputy Chief Johnson.
      Provenza: Where are you?
Pope (to Provenza): Is that Chief Johnson?
Provenza: My proctologist. You need something?
Pope: No. No, I just... You're asking where your proctologist is?
Provenza: Yes. I hate it when he surprises me.
