I've only been watching the Colbert Report for a few months, so forgive me if this was discussed in an early episode, but what does Stephen have against bears? does he hate them on principle, or has he had an unfortunate experience with one before? again, sorry if this was explained on the show, I haven't seen all of the episodes yet.

That's the reason.  I missed that I guess.  I just know he dislikes em.

I actually think it was in an interview not an episode.

Nonetheless, it's a great running gag.

Or me and sharks.  Cept Stephen doesn't scream when he sees em like me.

I think I was afraid of chimpanzees when I was little kid. I'm long since recovered, though.

I've always had a little fear of goats, myself. It's their eyes... so big and bulgy.

"Bears are godless killing machines." Go up and say this to someone randomly at work/school/on-the-street tomorrow. I've done it like 10 times... The reaction is priceless.

One of his first guests was Gentle Ben. Things were going well until Colbert brought up gay marriage, which prompted the '70s TV star to maul a cameraman to death. This is also why Colbert never has celebrity guests on the show.

I'm kidding- I have no idea.

It all started when Stephen was eight. He was on a camping trip, and he witnessed his mother taking a "romp" through the forest.

And that's why he's named Col-Bert (Old joke of mine)

My mom keeps asking me what his problem with bears is.  Hard to explain.  She says he emphasizes his hatred too much.

Does he just hate them or does he have a fear of em also?

Isn't it funny and ironic how he hates bears but calls Bill O'Riely "pappa bear"? lol
