Is that why his "T" is silent and he's sooo sarcastic?

He does have French heritage, but he is American. The sarcasm is due to the fact that Stephen Colbert is actually playing a character. Stephen really isn't like that.

But really, he isn't being sarcastic. It's more satirist, considering how the character actually believes in what he says.

    According to Wikipedia:

Unlike Stewart, who essentially hosts The Daily Show as himself, Colbert developed a correspondent character for his pieces on the series. Colbert has described his correspondent character as "a fool who has spent a lot of his life playing not the fool" – an idiot who is informed enough to be able to cover for his idiocy much of the time, but is still an idiot.[12] He has modeled the character after Stone Philips "because he's the perfect, manly newsman package."[10] The character was frequently pitted against knowledgeable interview subjects, or against Stewart in scripted exchanges, with the resultant dialogue demonstrating the Colbert-character's lack of knowledge of whatever it is he's talking about;[1][12] he also made generous use of humorous fallacies of logic in explaining his point of view on any topic. Other Daily Show correspondents have adopted a similar style, and the convention of having more character-driven correspondent segments, with Stewart serving as a kind of straight-man foil, is now generally accepted as a part of the show's format.

Actually, kinda yeah.  I figured it was a character, but wasn't sure until he was on Conan.  I first thought he was full of himself.

Colber(t) sure plays his character well, he could probably act this way on the street if he wanted to, hes probably used to it. he could nail some1 in an arguement about nothing. he has a knack for it.

You know what? I always thought the silliest (in a bad way) thing Colbert ever did on the show was during the first couple of episodes where he did this fake Chinese accent segment. The point of it was, people watching the show should distinguish between Colbert the character and Colbert the person. I thought it was comletely forced and unnecessary but apparently I was wrong. I mean if you thought it was real then there have to be others watching thinking the same thing.

He has a twenty-year-old daughter? Wow, what a well-kept secret.
